Understanding How Dental Insurance Works
In order to understand the basics about dental insurance, it’s important to know these terms:
- Maximum: The annual maximum is a capped-off amount of money that your insurance will pay out for your treatments every year.
- Deductible: The yearly deductible is a set amount of money that your insurance company requires you to pay before your benefits will kick-in.
- Premium: Your premium is the monthly or yearly amount that you pay to get dental insurance coverage.
- In-Network Provider: Dental insurance plans work with certain healthcare providers to negotiate a contract with discounted fees and rates. These providers are considered in-network, allowing you to save money when you visit them.
What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers
Dental insurance plans are primarily focused on prevention. This means that to save yourself from out-of-pocket costs, it’s best to keep up with your routine appointments to your dentist to keep issues from developing. The average insurance plan uses a 100-80-50 coverage structure. What this means is that they cover 100 percent of the cost of preventive care, like checkups and cleanings, 80 percent of basic services, like dental fillings, and 50 percent of the cost of more major procedures, like tooth extractions.
In the case that you do get a tooth infection or other issue that requires a major treatment, our team will work with you and file claims on your behalf to make sure that you pay as little out of pocket as possible.
